BURDAARD/LEMMER (NL) – The tiny village of Burdaard on the Dokkumer Ee (between Leeuwarden and Dokkum) and Lemmer, on the IJsselmeer coast, are to become the first tourist transfer spots in Friesland, each equipped with a tourist information center, a restaurant on the waterfront, designer bike rental and mooring facilities, all at one location.

Starting in March 2016, ochre yellow Batavus Quips will be available to those who have chartered or own motor- and sailing yachts. The bikes are all equipped with saddlebags or a pannier and a poncho, in case it starts to rain. These hipster bikes, which received the Award for Excellence during the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven in October 2015, will be stationed at Hotel-Restaurant It Posthûs in Burdaard and Watersportcentrum Tacozijl in Lemmer.

Profit Voucher; enjoyment at a discount
Tourists who have booked with a member of Boat Charter Holland (BCH) can enjoy Burdaard, Lemmer and the surrounding areas at a discount on presentation of their Profit Voucher (available at BCH rental companies from Easter 2016 onwards). According to Albert Hendriks, the director of tourist information bureau Friesland Holland, of which BCH is a division, Burdaard is the ideal starting point to explore Northeast Friesland. “The village itself features two interesting attractions: the museum of primitive painter Ruurd Wiersma and saw- and flourmill De Zwaluw (the swallow). The village is included in four recreational routes: De Noord-Friese Winkeltjesroute (shopping), De Markant Friesland Museumroute, De WaddenzeeLandroute and De Elfstedenroute (Eleven Cities Route). By charting a cloverleaf with four loops, each a partial route, pleasure cruisers can explore four regions and several themes. It’s an area with many ancient churches and terps, Unesco World Heritage Sites, plenty of art and local craftman with unique artisanal products. The history of Friesland began 5,000 years ago in this landscape of terps. It’s a must for the foreign visitor.” The routes for exploring Burdaard and its surroundings are all between 25 and 41 kilometers and can be easily shortened by taking a short cut.

Many-faceted leisure park Watersportcentrum Tacozijl on the Plattedijk in Lemmer, favourably located on the route connecting the center of Lemmer, the beach and Unesco World Heritage Site Wouda stoomgemaal (a steam-driven pumping station), is the second Off the Boat On the Bike location in Friesland. The holiday region of Lemmer is an area abundant in water with famous lakes such as the IJsselmeer, the Tjeukemeer and the Groote Brekken. These are all ideal for any type of water-related recreation, including angling, and as such, unique in the Netherlands. The watersports activities, varying from the building and charter of the smallest fishing boats to large, seaworthy yachts, are concentrated in Lemmer and in the twin villages of Echtenerbrug-Delfstrahuizen, located on the navigational route connecting Friesland to Northwest Overijssel.
